Most of the theaters I go to in LA were still masking before the pandemic . I've only been to a couple since reopening, and the AMC at the Citywalk is the first one I've seen that has actually removed masking that was in there before. Regal has taken over what used to be the Arclight Sherman Oaks, and I've heard that they've stopped masking, but can't confirm. The closest theater to me is a Regal (although I haven't been in a year and a half).
Additionally, certain size film screens — whether received onsite pre-assembled or not — can be difficult to negotiate corners or floors to reach the cinema room. When I am viewing 16x9 content I simply return the lens to it's normal position, remove the mask and reattach it as shown here. In addition to keeping the mask close by, this has the added benefit of completely covering the components and their accompanying LED's while still allowing easy access when needed.

But I just tried to see Black Widow there this weekend, and they still had the full 1.85 screen exposed. I went out and asked the doorman about it, and he heard from the manager that the masking had actually been removed. Each movie theater room and each home cinema enthusiast is going to have unique needs and wants for their given situation. While power is applied , insert a screwdriver in the programming hole described in step 1 and hold the setting button down within six seconds of the power application start time. If you don't do it within 6 seconds, remove power, then re-apply power again (you'll have another 6 seconds to do it).
However, without a totally textureless surface your image won’t look as sharp as it should. With a projector shining on it you’ll see every bump and imperfection. At this point, the motor has entered into its limit programming mode. Even though you have removed power, it will remember that it is in programming mode.
And almost all of the older, single-screen theatres are gone, so there are only a handful of screens left that still have it. Most of our customers however find the experience in their media room with a flat projector screen to be just as immersive. If you have a less bright projector you may want to consider getting a film screen with a higher gain so more light gets reflected back towards the audience. Masking screens are often paired with projectors with anamorphic lenses.
In Melbourne, AU, I would guess that masking is gone in most cinemas. Even worse, I believe that there are only two cinemas left that run real film. When I saw Conjuring 3 I had to go out to the lobby to get someone to open up the masking, as it was a scope film and the screen was set up for 1.85. I'm not sure how long it had been that way; if people had just watched the film bleeding over on both sides like that in previous shows. I briefly considered just watching it that way, but decided it would bug me too much. Turns out it was just a pull cord on one side of the screen that I could have fixed myself.
For most people when they think about projection screens they picture a white surface. However for setups you’ll want to get a grey, silver or even a black home cinema screen. A black or grey projection surface provides your image better black levels than a plain white display.
The curtain kit should also come with instructions, but below is how I connected mine. Attach the lead curtain hook from each headrail half to a different side of the string. This allows the curtains on each side to open and close at the same time.
Honestly at this point, it’s probably twenty years off so who knows what the state of aspect ratios and home viewing will be then. Besides that, most theatres now run a bunch of commercials before the movie starts which ruins any thoughts of presentation or quality. In my viewing experience, the masking has been automated as long as the projectors have been automated. It's been a few years since I've been to a theater when there was a switch with the masking but when it still happened, it went from the pre-show commercials to the trailers and the masking would adjust if needed.
This line of screen is THX certified and has become the standard projection material for Hollywood screening rooms and editing studios. Kaleidescape, the company that created the first movie server for whole-house video entertainment, has announced a partnership with Stewart Filmscreen to fully automate the control of the ElectriMask screen masking systems. Some in-home cinema owners like a minimalist look so borderless projector screens are just right for them. However we typically don’t recommend borderless projector screens for home theaters because it’s nearly impossible to perfectly line up the image of the projector. This means you’ll likely have a sliver of light bleed around the edges of the screen unless you spend hours trying to align your projector. Some home movie theater enthusiasts want to have a curved projector screen.
